Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks by William Terrington
TERRINGTON, William. Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks: A Collection of Recipes for “Cups” and Other Compounded Drinks. London and New York: George Routledge and Sons, 1869.
First edition. Britain’s first ever book to contain cocktail recipes.
Written as a handbook to all beverages in modern use, the author goes to explain that modern British taste has evolved from traditional habits in eating and drinking, giving rise to a more refined taste through contact with France, and acquiring an appetite for American drinks, “those Transatlantic ‘notions’ – many of which, owing to their racy character, are properly styled ‘Sensations’ by our Yankee cousins.” (Preface)
There are numerous recipes for cups, slings, juleps, crustas, and of course cocktails, which the author defines as “compounds very much used by ‘early birds’ to fortify the inner man, and by those who like their consolation hot and strong.” Some of the cocktail recipes detailed here are Brandy or Gin Cocktail, Whisky Cocktail and Cider Cocktail. There is also a section dedicated to the `new art' of refrigeration.
