Medieval Manuscript Fragments from a late 13th century French Bible
[BIBLE. Six fragments removed from a book binding. ?Paris, late thirteenth-century]. Six small vellum fragments (c. 30 to 40 mm in height), each bearing Latin text in a minute hand, one with the remnants of an illuminated initial.
From the library of James Dearden (1931-2021), renowned Ruskin scholar, bibliographer, and book collector.
THESE SIX FRAGMENTS WERE ONCE USED AS STIFFENERS IN THE SPINE OF AN INCUNABLE (a 1477 Eusebius according to notes by James Dearden, to whom they were given). They are parts of a typical Paris Bible of the thirteenth-century with minute script and traces of a characteristic illuminated initial. The texts are from Genesis and Exodus.
Some staining and holes. Carefully preserved in modern cloth binding made by James Dearden himself.
