First edition. Isherwood’s evocative episodic novel set in Bohemian Berlin of the Weimer Republic, forming the basis of many subsequent adaptations for stage and film. The book comprises of six loosely connected semi-autobiographical pieces, including Sally Bowles (first published on its own in 1937 by the Hogarth Press). Since then Isherwood’s immortal heroine has featured as lead character in many acclaimed stage and screen productions, including the musical Cabaret, one of the most successful musicals of all time, as well as the iconic film Cabaret, for which Liza Minnelli won an Academy Award in 1973 for her role as Sally Bowles.
