Bennett, Alan. Writing Home. London and Boston: Faber and Faber, 1994.
First edition, second impression. Signed and inscribed by the author (to Mary) to title-page.
This book includes the diary Alan Bennett kept during the production of this first play, Forty Years On, which starred John Gielgud, together with hilarious accounts of filming on his many television plays, notably An Englishman Abroad and A Private Function. At the heart of Writing Home is Bennett’s story The Lady in the Van, the true account of Miss Mary Shepherd, a homeless tramp who took up residence in Bennett’s garden and stayed for 15 years. The Lady in the Van was adapted into film in 2015 starring Maggie Smith.
