Loosely inserted there is a small (9x15cm), typed letter, in its original envelope, dated 8th May 1963, signed by Sammy Davis, Jr., addressed to a couple of admirers from West London: ‘Dear Mr. and Mrs. Kemp, May I take this opportunity of thanking you for your kind letter. It is always nice to know that people such as yourselves can take time out to write. I am happy to know that you enjoyed the T.V. show and, believe me, your thoughts are much appreciated. Sincerely yours, Sammy Davis, Jr.’. The TV show mentioned was “Meet Sammy Davis”, and it aired on BBC on 5th May 1963. Also, loosely inserted are two contemporary newspaper clippings relating to Sammy Davis.
Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) was a legendary American entertainer and global superstar. He was a pioneer for African Americans in the entertainment field. An all-around performer who could sing, dance and act, play bass, trumpet vibraphone, piano, and percussion, Davis broke racial barriers in the entertainment world, and became the only non-white member of the Rat Pack.
