In a Summer Season by Elizabeth TAYLOR
TAYLOR, Elizabeth. In a Summer Season. London: Peter Davies, 1961
First edition. Elizabeth Taylor (1912-75) is increasingly recognised as one of the best British writers of the 20th century. She wrote 12 novels and a children’s book; her short stories appeared in leading magazines such as Vogue and the New Yorker.
In a Summer Season is set in an affluent village in the Chiltern Hills, where Kate Heron, a wealthy widow, rashly enters a second marriage with a much younger man.
250 pp. 8vo, original cloth. Very good in very good dust jacket (a couple of nicks and small chips; price-clipped; in clear, removable protective sleeve). Dust jacket design by Biro.
Provenance: ownership signature of Theodora Heal (1906-1992), sculptor, and wife of Anthony Heal, chairman of Heal’s, the famous British brand with over two centuries of history of furniture and homeware design. The Heal family and Elizabeth Taylor lived only a few miles apart in the village of Penn, Buckinghamshire, and most likely moved through the same social circles.
