An Adventure by Charlotte Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain
MOBERLY, C.A.E.; JOURDAIN, E.F. An Adventure. London: Faber and Faber, 1944.
Fourth edition, reprint. With an introduction by Edith Olivier and a note by J.W. Dunne.
An Adventure was first published in 1911. On a visit to Versailles in the summer of 1901, Charlotte Moberly (1846–1937), the first principal of St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford, and Eleanor Jourdain (1863–1924), the school’s vice-principal, shared an experience that gave rise to one of the best-known of all ghost stories, when they saw what they later surmised to be the ghost of Marie Antoinette.
A great best seller of its time, the book maintained its appeal with several later editions being published throughout the 20th century.
118 pp; 4 b/w folding plates. 8vo, original cloth. Neat owner’s name to front endpaper. Very good in slightly edge-worn/chipped dust jacket.
