One of the defining titles of the 1990s, this book is a collection that brings together the pieces Bushnell wrote in her regular column, “Sex and the City”, for New York Observer between 1994-6. The column was based on her own personal dating experiences and those of her friends, professional single women in their 30s, with a supporting cast of glitterati who inhabit the world of mid-nineties chic Manhattan. The main character, Carrie Bradshaw, is semi-autobiographical, and many other characters are based on real people, such as Gregory Roque (the film director Oliver Stone), River Wilde (young Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho), and Mr. Big (Vogue publisher, Ron Galotti). This book with its recurring cast of characters and unfolding narrative flows like a novel in serial form.
Sex and the City, the TV adaptation of Bushnell’s book, ran into 6 seasons from 1998-2004, it became a sensational global hit, and one of the most loved and influential television series of all time.
