Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser (SIGNED)
FRASER, Antonia. Marie Antoinette: The Journey. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2001.
First edition. Signed by the author to title-page. Antonia Fraser’s vivid and empathetic portrait of the French queen, whose dramatic story she attempts to tell ‘without anticipating its terrible ending’.
This book served as an inspiration for Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst in the titular role. In a letter to Lady Antonia Fraser, Coppola wrote: ‘I’m going to make a film of Marie Antoinette, and as your book is the best one, I would love to work from it. […] Your book is full of life, not a dry historical drama and this is what I want to bring to the film interpretation.’ (Sofia Coppola’s Archive, 2023)
Hardback (ISBN: 0297819089). Large 8vo; xviii, 488 pp. Col + b/w illustrations. Minor bump to front panel. Near fine in dust wrapper (spine slightly faded).
